It is with deep sadness we share the news of the passing of Dr Catherine Hamlin, co-founder of Hamlin Fistula Ethiopia.
On Wednesday March 18th Catherine passed away peacefully at her home on the grounds of the Addis Ababa Fistula Hospital in Ethiopia where she has lived for 61 years.
Catherine is truly an inspirational woman. I never knew of obstetric fistula until it happened to me. I took such comfort in Catherine Hamlin’s book and all the hard work she’s done for women in need. She gave me hope when I felt truly alone in this world. Reading he words and the wisdoms she shared mended my soul. She is the prime example of compassion, intelligence, grace, and determination. May she rest in peace.
I have always been in awe of the remarkable challenge that Catherine, and her husband, chose to undertake and the incredible legacy that they leave will live on. To a determined, incredible woman who will always be admired, may you now rest in peace.
Thank you for helping women in Ethiopia !! You are our champion , the meaning of true feminist , Inspiration for all women and most of all a hero to all the Vulnerable woman who suffered because fistula !
What an amazing legacy and investment in the transformation and healing of countless women’s lives over such a long period of time. During my Christian ministry in several places we supported her work. I had the privilege of knowing and ministering to Catherine’s mother Elinor Nicholson in the eventide of her life knew her siblings during 6 1/2 years at Molong. To family my deepest sympathy and God’s comfort. To God be the glory for this, his faithful servant. Psalm 121.
I would like to express my sadness at the news that Dr Hamlin has passed away and to extend my sincere condolences to her family and all whose lives she touched and restored. She was a strong and compassionate woman and an inspirational human being. Her tireless efforts throughout her life to eradicate obstetric fistula for the women of Ethiopia have been extraordinary which is why, when I met her in 2012, I asked if could paint her portrait. Reluctantly but fortunately she agreed and it was a privilege to be able to do so and to now have this painting as a tribute to her.
I am very saddened to hear of Catherine’s passing and what a legacy she has left behind. Every single life that she has helped has meant so much to so many, and the future work that will carry on because of her kindness, her generosity and her fearlessness!! What a wondeful human – What a saint!
It was a privilege to know Catherine and also to experience her work in Ethiopia first hand. What a legacy she leaves behind ! Gentle and unassuming, she travelled the world to proclaim the needs of her fistula patients and to raise funds to enable her pioneering work to continue and expand. And this work will continue because of Catherine’s vision, until obstetric fistulas are history.
A legend, a shero. The world is a lot better thanks to the extraordinary life and work of you, Dr Catherine Hamlin. And a lot poorer now that you have left us. But your memory and work will live on and continue to make remarkable change – for individuals and for the world. Thanks for being an inspiration, thanks for being a role-model, thanks for being you.
Dr Hamlin and her husband were an inspiration to me for the type of practical, selfless good works that we should always be aiming for. I know that Dr Hamlin is now in the loving embrace of her heavenly father and reunited with her husband and I wouldn’t deny her that for a moment. In the strange times we are now experiencing, I can’t help but think we have lost a great ambassador for compassion and practical solutions. I can only hope that we can keep Dr Hamlin and the amazing life she led at the forefront of our minds as we work through unprecedented global circumstances. Thank you Dr Hamlin, you are an inspiration and will be sorely missed. XX
I cannot express my sympathies enough on the loss of this remarkable woman, but know that so many will follow in her footsteps. As a fellow Australian I am so proud of her efforts, spirit and dedication to those she cared for. Rest in peace.
What an amazing woman. What an amazing life. What an amazing legacy Catherine leaves behind. Her dedication to supporting women and their children will continue to be recognised and the wonderful work of the foundation will continue.
I am so sad to hear of the passing of this truly remarkable selfless woman.
I feel blessed to have just read her books and followed her journey. The world has lost one of the very very vey best people.
I first remember Dame Catherine at my first Zonta Convention and was so impressed with her story and so glad when Zonta in later years supported her cause. If it wasn’t for her we would never have known about this problem and it’s effects, or had any idea how to deal with this. She will be remembered with her Husband for their unfailing work in this field.
Dear DR. Catherine,
Thank you so much for your great contribution which saves many lives of our sisters. We never forget your novel deed !
May God bless you soul and Rest In Peace !
