It is with deep sadness we share the news of the passing of Dr Catherine Hamlin, co-founder of Hamlin Fistula Ethiopia.
On Wednesday March 18th Catherine passed away peacefully at her home on the grounds of the Addis Ababa Fistula Hospital in Ethiopia where she has lived for 61 years.
Dr Catherine Hamlin was one of those people who make the world believe in the possibility of change, because they make change happen. Thank you for the changes you made in so many lives directly – and also for inspiring others to find their mission and to make other changes.
Thankyou from the bottom of my heart for being an amazing role model, for improving the lives of so many women and inspiring me to be the best I can be. What an amazing life..🙌🏻🙏🏻🥰
I was fortunate to meet Catherine in London in 1999 when she was visiting Professor Gordon Williams. We passed a delightful evening together at Gordon’s home. As a fellow Australian I was so very proud of this pioneering woman and her husband who had selflessly dedicated their lives to making such a profound difference in the lives of the women of Ethiopia. Catherine was and will remain an inspiration and I hope that her dream of first world maternal and infant mortality and morbidity becomes a reality for her adopted home.
You led a most amazingly giving life, may you now sleep gently and peacefully, may your legacy live on in those you taught and those of who were touched by your selfless nature, in gods arms.
An extraordinary human being. The work Catherine Hamlin did made her a shining light in many a woman’s darkest hour. The rest of us are only a dim glow in comparison
Dr Hamlin was a true heroine, a wonderful doctor and a gentle woman, who will be remembered for her medical care of women who needed it most. The hospital that she established and administered, and the people she trained, and who worked with her, may they continue with her work in memory of her.
Thank you Dr Hamlin for your determination and compassion.
Dearest Dr Catherine, I have loved you and your remarkable work with the women you have helped. You have left a wonderful legacy and you will be remembered for you compassion and care, Rest In Peace darling one xx
What a wonderful lady who thought of so many others before herself. You changed so many lives and have left a legacy on this earth. Heaven is rejoicing now xx
Thank you for your good and faithful service Catherine.
I made this sculpture of you a few years ago as part of my courageous women series. May your work and legacy live on as you now do in heaven.
Vale Catherine Hamlin – your life inspired so many, and healed so many. You shone a light in the darkness of sickness, disease and neglect. May you rest in the arms of Jesus, reunited with your husband, having run the race with love and grace.
I came to Ethiopia in 2015 as a fundraiser and runner for the hospital. I’d been a supporter for a number of years before that.
In the hustle of Addis Ababa, the hospital was such a happy place and the hope infectious. Thank you for your vision and let us help your legacy.
After reading “ The Hospital by the River: a story of hope in 2001”…
I felt inspired and relieved that Catherine and Reg were there to help and support women in this shocking situation…
What wonderful people they were…
