It is with deep sadness we share the news of the passing of Dr Catherine Hamlin, co-founder of Hamlin Fistula Ethiopia.
On Wednesday March 18th Catherine passed away peacefully at her home on the grounds of the Addis Ababa Fistula Hospital in Ethiopia where she has lived for 61 years.
Wonderful woman, Catherine Hamlin, the world has lost a giant advocate for women, African women.
I was so pleased and humbled to meet you in Addis Ababa at your hospital some years ago. Such a blessing to the world.
Knowing how you have developed your work over decades I am confident you have left matters well in hand for the future.
Catherine’s dedication and humanitarian example inspired me to become an annual donor. Encourage your family, friends, neighbours and colleagues to do likewise!
She was an amazing women, kind, generous, dedicated and moreover she was a women living for peoples happiness. My your soul rest in peace. My condolences the families and friends.

‘The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends towards justice’ – It certainly does when you have passionate, kind and strong women like Catherine pushing it there. Catherine’s dedication to the lives of Ethiopian women needlessly suffering obstetric fistula is inspiring and moving. I can only hope to channel some of her passion in the work that I do. We won’t stop until fistula is a thing of the past. Rest in peace Catherine.
Catherine lived an incredible life having made an enormous difference to the lives and health of thousands upon thousands of women in Ethiopia. Her passionate commitment to women and maternal health through her trust and belief in fulfilling God’s work with love and devotion to others is something that we are all in awe of.
Thank you, Dr. Hamlin, for working so compassionately, selflessly and tirelessly to improve the lives of so many thousands of Ethiopian women suffering from such a horrendous childbirth injury. You have changed the maternal healthcare landscape in Ethiopia forever and your dream of eradicating obstetric fistula will be realised. What an inspiration you are! Rest in peace.
Catherine Hamlin is an example to us all of what good can be propagated in the world with the skills, compassion and dedication to work together to improve the lives of others.

Most of her 96 years were generously given to help the poor women of our country with traumatic birth injuries. We are all thankful for Catherine’s lifelong dedication. We promise to continue her legacy and realise her dream to eradicate fistula from Ethiopia. Forever.
