It is with deep sadness we share the news of the passing of Dr Catherine Hamlin, co-founder of Hamlin Fistula Ethiopia.
On Wednesday March 18th Catherine passed away peacefully at her home on the grounds of the Addis Ababa Fistula Hospital in Ethiopia where she has lived for 61 years.
Dr Catherine Hamlin, dedicated her life to improving the lives of the women of Ethiopia. We are so fortunate to have the enduring work of her foundation live on and continue to transform more lives. My deepest condolences to her family, friends and those touched by her life.
How blessed you are that you have lived a meaningful life.
Your body is no longer with us, but you will live forever in our minds. ETHIOPIA and her beautiful young girls will always remember what you have done!
May your beautiful soul Rest In Peace!
Thank you for your incredible work, Dr Hamlin. You changed so many girls’ lives, healed and nurtured them when no one else would. This in turn touched lives across the globe, just knowing there was someone like you fighting for the most vulnerable. May your incredibly valuable work continue through your foundation, and may your life be celebrated across the globe by all those who would advance the status of women and girls on this earth.
Vale, Dr Hamlin, and thank you.
Africa has yet again lost a pillar who represented love, kindness and the real definition of humanity.
We shall forever love you and miss you.
I have never met you but I read about your contribution in laying a great foundation not only for women to rise but for all of us to live,
Uganda is equally attached.
May Your Soul Rest in Eternal Peace Kaaka. (Grandma)
I consider Catherine Hamlin one of the true heroes of our time. Her work was revolutionary and life-changing for so many women, families and communities. Reading Hospital by the River changed my world view forever, and made me passionate to this cause. I hope that the Hamlins’ fistula work will continue on as their legacy until it is needed no longer. Although her serene presence will be keenly missed, I am sure she has been received home with much celebration and joy.
In a world gone mad at the moment, to me Catherine Hamlin was and will continue to be a wonderful reminder of the good caring people if this world. Thank you so much for the help you did to help some of the most vulnerable. xx
Dear Dr. Hamlin,
You are my hero. I was a Labor & Delivery/Mother-Baby RN in the United States. I would have loved to work for you but I have to content myself with just sending donations. You have been a huge blessing on earth. Now you can enjoy your reward with the Lord. God bless you.
I cry now with Ethiopia Australia and the world – we all say a sad farewell to the most amazing woman of our time. I am so very sad but also happy for all those women that she has left in her admirable wake to carry on the unbelievably important work. Catherine you were a saint, an angel and an extraordinary woman – we are forever in your debt. Sincere condolences to her family and all in Ethiopia. Rest in Peace dear Catherine.
I met Dr Hamlin 6 years ago just after her 90th Birthday when she decided not to perform surgery anymore. My husband Prem & I were invited to afternoon tea in her home on the grounds of the hospital in Addis Ababa. She had baked a cake & it was a delightful visit. We discussed her time in Ethiopia with her much loved husband Reg & spoke of her time in my hometown of Adelaide South Australia. Her son Richard was in Addis visiting at the time. He reminisced of his time at St Peters College & also his involvement in the Fistula Foundation. Dr Catherine was so warm friendly & inclusive & we chatted whilst she held my hands in hers looking deep into my eyes. I will never forget her kindness & beautiful manner. As she showed us around the hospital it was obvious she was much loved by her patients & staff. Dr Catherine was revered around the world & I will be ever grateful for this personal experience in my life.
Vale Dr Hamlin – a life well lived & a devotion to the Ethiopian women who were given back a life after being cast out by society.
Thank you Dr Hamlin for being an inspiration to all of us. Especially us female Australian doctors. You have lived a selfless life committed to wonderful service. Never forgotten.
