It is with a sad heart and grateful memories I receive the news about Catherine Hamlin’s passing. Among many important things that she represents in my professional life as a midwife and a development worker my earliest memory remains the most important. As a 6 year old girl living with my family in Addis Abeba, I almost lost my mother in an obstetric emergency where she haemorrhaged in late pregnancy. She was rushed to the then called Lil’ Tsahai Hospital where Catherine was on call that night. She knew what she had to do, she found a blood donor, she saw to the needs of my mum(and dad) in a way they could never forget. Nor can I. My little brother to be, did not survive but my mother did. I bow to you Catherine and to your work, for all those lives that you saved and for all the lives of women, girls and their families that you have restored.
Thank you and may you rest in peace as your long and tireless work now is done.
The Fistula Clinic as it was then known was the first project I was responsible for when I joined World Vision Canada in 1976. Over the next four decades I had occassions to witness both Reginald and Catherine as they ministered to their beautiful patients. They gave them human touch which many had been denied for years. They gave them healing and they gave them hope. Catherine bravely carried on the work after Reginald’s death – motivated by both the great need and God’s continued call on her life. I am one of those blessed to have known this amazing woman and testify to the difference she and her team made in the lives of countless women. Yes Catherine, your legacy and the work lives on. Others have responded to the call to ensure your work continues – like the Fistula Foundation in the US. As God welcomes you home, may He bless those who continue the work you and Reginald began. Thank you Catherine – for a life well lived. Well done – good and faithful servant. Sincerely, Linda Tripp
What an amazing women and doctor who changed the life of so many women, trained and established fistula health care with humility, dedication and length of time. I had the honour of spending some time alone with her when she visited her niece in Australia. Her book is inspirational.May she now take her rest with the angels and her beloved Lord.
