I would like to express my sadness at the news that Dr Hamlin has passed away and to extend my sincere condolences to her family and all whose lives she touched and restored. She was a strong and compassionate woman and an inspirational human being. Her tireless efforts throughout her life to eradicate obstetric fistula for the women of Ethiopia have been extraordinary which is why, when I met her in 2012, I asked if could paint her portrait. Reluctantly but fortunately she agreed and it was a privilege to be able to do so and to now have this painting as a tribute to her.
