It is with deep sadness we share the news of the passing of Dr Catherine Hamlin, co-founder of Hamlin Fistula Ethiopia.
On Wednesday March 18th Catherine passed away peacefully at her home on the grounds of the Addis Ababa Fistula Hospital in Ethiopia where she has lived for 61 years.
Tears fill my eyes as I write. So sad when such a beautiful, loving, caring saint leaves this earth. Please accept my sincere condolences – to all her family and those who knew and loved her.
Praise God for a life lived in love and obedience to our Lord Jesus Christ. I am forever thankful that I met Catherine and saw the amazing work of the Fistula Hospital in Ethiopia. May God continue to raise up people to continue this work to fulfil her dream. Absent from the body, present with her Lord.
What an amazing and inspirational woman of God! Thank you for all you have done, sincere condolences to all your family and the beautiful people of Ethiopia. I thank God for you. Xx
Vale Dr Catherine Hamlin. What an inspiring and selfless journey you and your late husband undertook 61 years ago. Thank you for showing us the true meaning of love, devotion and total care for those less fortunate than us.
Heaven had a new angel. 🙏🌹
I had the great honour & pleasure of visiting the amazing Dr Catherine Hamlin in Addis on two occasions. Her story & that of her husband is incredible. So many women, communities & student midwives benefitted from their great work. RIP.
Selfless, generous, empathetic. She gave her whole life to the cause she believed in most. Catherine is a modern day saint, but in reality, just a kind, caring and proactive advocate for people in society who were isolated, outcast and forgotten.
An inspirational iconic lady.
I have watched in awe. Many thanks Catherine.
My husband, Chris, and I are saddened to read the news of Catherine’s death. She and the late Reg have been inspirational and tireless in their lives’ work, and we will continue to support the Foundation.
Our condolences to her family her colleagues and to all those whose lives she touched.
The news of Dr Hamlin’s passing brought me great sadness, but what a magnificent life she led in her 96 years! I first encountered Dr Hamlin’s work as a young woman in high school and the story of her life and her great contribution to women’s health in Ethiopia had such a formative impact on my life. Dr Hamlin was and will continue to be such an inspiration to young women like myself in particular regarding the impact we can have to better the lives of thousands of others with our actions and determination. I had the great privilege of meeting Dr Hamlin when volunteering at one of her fundraising events in Sydney and was struck by her resounding humility in spite of the amazing things she had achieved and her simple desire to see the work she did continue beyond her years. She took extra time out of her packed schedule to personally thank each and every volunteer for their time and effort to support her fundraiser. That kind of grace is not often seen! I have no doubt, given the formidable legacy she has left in Australia, Ethiopia and across the globe, her campaign to eradicate fistula’s in Ethiopia and other similar developing countries will someday soon become a reality!
Exemplary life, exemplary human being; her book touched me in an amazing way and I have followed her incredible life for years. Rest In Peace Catherine you were one amazing woman.
What a loss. I’m expecting a small bequest in a few weeks from an aunt who died recently in her mid nineties
When I receive it I would like to share it with the Foundation as a tribute to my aunt and Catherine.
My introduction to Dr.Catherine Hamlin was reading her book “The Hospital by the River” Became a devoted supporter of her charity from then. A selfless wonderful woman setting an amazing example together with her husband, to other woman. God bless her wonderful soul.
