It is with deep sadness we share the news of the passing of Dr Catherine Hamlin, co-founder of Hamlin Fistula Ethiopia.
On Wednesday March 18th Catherine passed away peacefully at her home on the grounds of the Addis Ababa Fistula Hospital in Ethiopia where she has lived for 61 years.
I write this with tears in my eyes but warmth in my heart for such a wonderful person as Catherine Hamlin. She is the “always Australian of the year”. As a female I picture myself in the position of so many young females with fistula problems – and am always grateful for the work she and Reg did for them – what an amazing legacy.
An amazing lady who will always be remembered for the amazing work she did in Ethipia. Sincere sympathy to all who loved her. A saint to so many women.
Dr Catherine Hamlin, a most wonderful, caring and intelligent woman. She has done so much for the people of Ethiopia, giving back thousands of their mothers, wives and daughters. The world will be a much emptier and sadder place with her passing. Thank you Dr Hamlin, you gave your everything and left a huge legacy.
Feeling sad and wishing condolences to her precious family, friends, and colleagues. I remain in awe of her commitment to women who through no fault of their own suffered so much. Catherine was a remarkable woman and this is reflected in the fact that her work and influence will live on. Vale Catherine

Dear Dr Hamlin. May your beautiful soul rest in peace in the arms of our Lord. God bless you for all the women you have saved. May your tireless work continue in your beautiful name xx
From the moment I picked up ‘Hospital by the River’ I was enthralled. The work Emaye and her beloved Reg did will never be forgotten, as they blazed a trail for so many to follow and showed exactly what holistic care should look like. I had so wanted to visit, but fund raising high teas were as close as I got. Well done to a woman who has fulfilled what she knew to be her God-given work. Well done, good and faithful servant. Deepest sympathies to her both her birth and her Ethiopian families.
I read your book when I was a teenager and was so inspired by your achievements. I am now a gynaecology nurse in Australia and I hope that your legacy continues for many years. RIP Catherine. You will be missed
An incredibly wonderful woman who I am proud to say was my inspiration and motivation to study medicine and pursue a career as an OBGYN. Thank you Dr Hamlin for your compassion and guidance that has touched the world and made it a better place.

While I knew the day would come, it’s always still surprising when truly great people pass away. It’s as if they become immortal during their lifetime, with their strength, conviction and immense influence on the world. What a magnificent woman you are Catherine Hamlin and I’m sure that magnificence lives on forever in so many ways and in so many peoples lives.
