It is with deep sadness we share the news of the passing of Dr Catherine Hamlin, co-founder of Hamlin Fistula Ethiopia.
On Wednesday March 18th Catherine passed away peacefully at her home on the grounds of the Addis Ababa Fistula Hospital in Ethiopia where she has lived for 61 years.
In a world where ‘taking more’ is often celebrated lived a woman who knew ‘giving more’ was what was needed most. Today we mourn the death of a women who inspired us to find our better self and to do something with that part of us!
I, like many others, will endeavour to live a better life, one of ‘giving more’, due to the grace Catherine Hamlin demonstrated every day.
Thank you for dedicating your life to serving and loving the most vulnerable and marginalised. As an aspiring midwife, I am greatly inspired by your testimony. God welcomed His daughter home today.
Catherine’s story was one of the reasons I chose to study medicine. I am now a doctor and aspire to specialise in paediatrics. Her passion and commitment to her field of work will always be an inspiration to me.
What an incredible woman (and man) and an incredible legacy! Such care for the poorest of the poor and bringing, not only healing for these women, but dignity and new life!!! I am honoured to support this service as much as I can. May Dr Catherine rest in peace with her beloved husband, may she have the reward she so richly deserves and may her legacy and legend live on: an end to fistula. She will be remembered and admired. Love and prayers to you all. Carry on with your good, good work!! God bless you, in gratitude and honour, Jessica Kelly
Dear Catherine, I am sitting here looking at the wonderful rendering by Wendy Sharpe of the patients and grounds of the Addis Ababa Fistula Hospital. Just as you created a “paridise garden”, a centre of calm and beauty in the noisy heart of Addis; so you gave back wholeness to thousands of women who now call you “Mother”. Thank you on behalf of all the sisters here in Australia for your life’s work. I can only reiterate the words of Matthew 25: 23 – Well done, good and faithful servant
Thank you for being such an inspiring, faithful example, Dr Hamlin. Heaven has gained yet another saint. May the words “Welcome, good and faithful servant!” be your well-deserved portion and a timely spurring-on for those of us who still have our time here on earth. May He continue to multiple the good work He began through you. Rest in our everlasting Father’s loving arms!
I am so sorry and sad to hear of the passing of
Dr Catherine Hamlin
My condolences to all her family the people of Ethiopia and around the world who know of this incredible woman.

So sad to learn of this legendary lady passing I feel it a blessing to have been made aware of the plight of others outside my comfort zone, her commitment to this cause has been a shining light and an encouragement for others and myself to continuing our support in her memory.
