I am very grateful for the fact that Dr Hamlin – because of his policy of visiting all inpatients after he returned from a trip away – visited me the night he returned from a trip in 1952. He recognised that I was in labour and in distress and had me taken to the labour ward where my daughter was delivered – alive, thankfully. He said that if she hadn’t been delivered then she would have died.
