Catherine was a visionary, a compassionate and innovative leader. She understood and implemented task shifting and task sharing long before it became defined in health care for resource poor settings. Her recognition of the living nightmare suffered by women with fistula and of returning them to society whole with skills as well as a repair was a lesson to the world. FIGO recognized Catherine many years ago for her remarkable leadership and contribution and it was an honour to visit her when I was FIGO president along with the then president of ICM and to wonder at how much she had accomplished against all odds. A true giant among us, may she rest in peace and may her family know all our gratitude.
