How fortunate the world has been been that Dr Catherine’s ‘crowded hour’ was indeed a lifetime.

Oh my … there are not enough words of deep feeling that can express our sadness at the passing of Emaye Catherine … her devotion, kindness, humanity, knowledge, courage in all that she did and accomplished, with her husband, so selflessly for a whole lifetime … restoring dignity to women who had nowhere else to go, in a country that she loved and called home … constantly sharing her love, her humanity, and her quiet determination … … rest now Dr Hamlin in the certain knowledge that you will never, ever be forgotten, and always loved, and always admired … …
After supporting her cause for over 40 years, I believe that Catherine Hamlin is the greatest woman who has ever lived. She, with her husband Reg, has helped more people (mostly women) than any living person I know. And these women are amongst the most desperately poor and suffering in the world. Their work has been so effective and successful over the last 60 years with the number of fistula operations performed and the push to prevent future fistulas happening by training local midwives in the five additional hospitals built over the last few years that it looks like their goal to eradicate fistulas in Ethiopia will be reached in the near future. What an achievement! And what an amazing legacy she has left. Hooray for Catherine and the future of her dream.
I am inspired by the selfless, humble life of Dr Hamlin. As an Australian, she modelled compassion and perseverance. She not only improved the lives of thousands of Ethiopian women, but forged a way for the world to appreciate & support childbirth more sensitively. Thank you for your sacrifices & world-changing work.
An absolute beacon of light for so many women. What an amazing human being. Rest In Peace
Such sad news to hear that the life of this wonderful human being has come to a close. Catherine was one of a group of selfless people whose generosity and care for others was an inspiration not only to those around her but also to people like me who only knew of her and her work from afar. I used to teach about the hospital in Addis Ababa in my Geography course at high school and try to get my girls to imagine what life must be like for those poor girls and women who suffer with fistula problems. It is amazing that most women in Australia have no idea of what a fistula is, let alone how it can totally destroy the lives of so many women around the world. I think the thing I admire most about Catherine and her husband is that they trained local people to carry out these simple reparative operations so that they could take the care of these women into their own hands in the future, thus giving them not only knowledge but also dignity. I trust that the foundations they set in place will continue to grow and be supported so that many more women can benefit from their life’s work.
The world was blessed to have Catherine. After so many years of dedication and hard work may she be resting peacefully knowing her legacy will live on and on.
Such a wonderful lady who quietly gave so much to those in need. May she rest in peace.
God bless you for your life’s contribution.
Thank you for a lifetime of Service. May we all learn from your example💙
It was with great sadness that I heard of Catherine’s death, I was lucky enough to attend a talk by Catherine in Adelaide, she was so inspiring. As a family doctor with a strong interest in women’s health, I have been very proud to support the work of the foundation. Catherine Hamlin and her husband’s legacy will live on and she is remembered very fondly. Condolences to those touched closely by her loss.
